Be My Ghost - Synopsis

Young George Travis, like Stephen King, writes horror fiction, but he has ’writer’s block’ - hasn’t had an idea in months!  He travels to rural New Hampshire where his eccentric Aunt Julia has willed him Black Raven Inn, a gloomy summer hotel.  Local villagers say the place is haunted by the dangerous spirit of Mercy Appleton.  When George and his bride-to-be arrive on a dark and stormy night, all manner of terror occurs!  High school students detoured from a Halloween celebration seek shelter,  Rootin’-Tootin’ (an Egyptian mummy) is delivered for storage, a Hollywood agent drops in, and two weird sisters collect roadkill so they can practice taxidermy.  When a murder takes place, what had started out as a fun, ends up as a strange "whodunit" mystery!

Be My Ghost - Audition Monologues

***BE PREPARED TO PERFORM 2 TO 3 OF THESE MONOLOGUES!***

Male Monologues

George Travis: Zola! What are you doing here? How did you get here? (responds to Zola) Show a little respect, Zola. After all, this place belonged to my aunt, and now it belongs to me. (referring to The Black Raven Inn) Maybe I can come up with something for next year. (reacts to Zola, frustrated) I need a long vacation. I haven’t had a decent idea for a story in a long time. I’ve got writer’s block. No, I’m staying here. (Zola is insistent) Zola, you may be the best literary agent in Los Angeles, but you sure don’t know how to take no for an answer. Can’t you understand? I’ve got writer’s block. The creative juices aren’t flowing. Somebody better give the button a push. I don’t seem to have the knack for it anymore.

Billy Hastings: (Billy enters and begins crossing the stage whne he is stopped by banging at the door. He trots to the front hallway, but is afraid to go to the door, More banging, so he calls up the front steps) Mrs. Shrivel? Mrs. Shrivel, people at the front door! (Makes an animal sound, responding to Mrs. Shrivel) You know I don’t like answering the door. (Licks the back of his hand. Quickly moves downstage and crouches) I don’t like to open the front door. How many times do I have to tell you? (Resigned) All right, all right, I’m going. (Mumbles to himself as he goes to the front door) Unbolt the front door, unbolt the front door. Unbolt the front door. (Unbolts the door, opens it and greets the guests). Billy don’t like strangers.

Sheriff Sandford: Evenin’, all. You Mr. Travis? Nice to meet you, sir. Listen, the creek water is rising and the bridge is about to go. It hasn’t gone yet. But it’s mighty shaky. I hope you won’t think I’m overstepping myself, Mr. Travis, but I don’t want anyone driving over the bridge. It could go any minute. (Responds to George) I’m afraid I can’t allow that. If you were on that bridge and it collapsed, I’d have a lot of explaining to do. I advise you to stay the night. (Changing topics) By the way, I enjoy your fiction, Mr. Travis. Especially when you write about man-eating plants. I’m a fan of man-eating plants.

Stonewall Dunn: (Walks in and observes the place) This can’t be the place. (Observes some more, and slowly approaches Kay) Listen, Kay. I went to a lot of trouble with that bank robbery. I planned everything down to the last detail. No margin for error. With my record, I knew the cops would come looking for me. That’s why I passed the money on to you and told you to hide it someplace good. Some place safe. (Threatening) If that money ain’t where you stashed it, you’re in big trouble, Kay. If you’re pulling some kind of scam – pow! Stonewall Dunn don’t trust no one. (Responds to Kay) Where in the office did you hide it? (Gets info from Kay. Looks left and right) Naw. You stay here. Sit down and keep your ears open and your mouth shut. Let me know if anyone makes for the office.

Female Monologues

Betty Fisher: (Enters, looks under the weather) George, any luck with the hot water bottle? (Responds to George) I feel okay, except for my head. It’s all stuffed up. I feel like I’m talking underwater. I haven’t sneezed for a while. That’s a good sign (Suddenly sneezes) Ach-choo! Hmmm. A cup of hot tea does sound good. (Notices George) What’s wrong? (Listens and responds to George) Have I heard anything strange? Well, yes. I thought I imagined it. I did hear someone sobbing in the hallway. But, when I opened my door, no one was there. (responds to her own words) But George, you of all people. You don’t believe in ghosts. (hears a scream) Someone screamed! (Suddenly fearful) George, as soon as the storm is over, put a “For Sale” sign on the door. We can catch a plane and be back in Los Angeles before the weekend. Let’s do it!

Mrs. Shrivel: (As George enters) You, I take it, are Mr. Travis. I am Mrs. Shrivel. In addition to being the housekeeper, I am also the resident manager. On behalf of the staff, myself included, may I welcome you to The Black Raven Inn. (Notices Betty. Coldly) I didn’t know you were bringing someone with you. (Responds to George) How nice. I approve of marriage. It’s practical. You’d better get out of those raincoats (Calls offstage) Paulette! (Takes raincoats and speaks to Paulette) Take these into the kitchen and dry them at the stove. (Irritated by Paulette) You’re not hired to babble rubbish, Paulette. Off you go. (To George) Good help is not easy to find for Black Raven Inn. Most of the villagers are – (breaks off) a superstitious lot. Try not to pay them any attention.

Zola Lewellyn: (Enters from outside rain) New Hampshire in the rain. Someone ought to write a song with that title. I think it would sell. (Advances on George) George, you haven’t written a line in over three months. Your publishers are screaming. The studios are screaming. Your public is screaming. I’m screaming. (Responds to George) Don’t be ridiculous. George, you’ve got to come back to the West Coast. You need the stimulation of film studios, television series, the literary scene. You’re not going to find any of those things in rural New Hampshire. (Finally notices surroundings) I thought this place was supposed to be a tavern or an inn? (Responds to George) Looks more like the Black Hole of Calcutta. When the last time this place saw a dust cloth?

Countess Starlight: (Enters waving a wand) Thrilling! That’s what it is. Thrilling. The climatic conditions couldn’t be better. It’s always on a night such as this that it happens. The ghost of Mercy Appleton! (Responds to a question) I am Countess Starlight. Unusual name for an unusual person. I’m a psychic. I’m in touch with other worlds. I understand other worlds. Other worlds understand me. Ebb and flow, ebb and flow.  Tonight I will hold a séance. Tonight, I will summon the spirit of Mercy Appleton from the other world. (Responds to George) Please don’t make light of such things, Mr. Travis. The spirits don’t like it.

Anastasia: Have I been naughty? (Softly) Ha, ha, ha. Hee, hee, hee.  Ha, ha, ha. I’ve always wanted to meet Mercy Appleton. Where’s Countess Starlight? I want to see Countess Starlight. I’m hungry. I want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. With a pickle and three chips. I want to see Countess Starlight! I’ve changed my mind. Make it tuna on whole wheat. Hold the pickle. No chips. Ha, ha, ha. Hee, hee, hee.
